WASTELAND HOP

Live Indie Hip Hop from Fort Collins, Colorado. "Wasteland Hop is a lyrical lovechild of an exotic menage a trois between rock, hip hop, and folk."
Mixing influences from The Roots to The Black Keys, Fort Collins indie hip-hop band Wasteland Hop’s songs are a striking back-and-forth between soulful lead vocalist Steph Jay and MC Mickey Kenny, who shatters the divide between rap and poetry. The band blends Kenny’s insightful lyrics with high energy, funk-fueled beats, very much in the same vein as Colorado hip-hop artists Flobots.
Wasteland Hop is that 6 headed musical Chimera that brings hip hop lyricism into the live body of rock, folk, and blues. Out of Fort Collins, Colorado, they have established themselves as a clear up and coming band on the national scene. In 2014 they opened for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and performed in their first SXSW showcase. This will be Wasteland Hop's fourth time touring Alaska, and they are poised to bring the party.

Funny River Bluegrass Pre-Fest Showcase

Our friend Jacob “Deuce” Larson, talked of doing a music festival as we all jammed on the lookout tower on the property in June 2009. Sadly before he had the time to see it become a reality he passed away on July 12th, 2009. Alaska will always miss Deucy Danger’s musical inspiration. Friends parted ways for the winter, and as July 2010 came around we were inspired to do what our friend had once talked of... A backwoods camp-out venue, For musicians and artist, by musicians and artist. The second weekend in July, FRBG was born. In Memory Of Jacob "Deuce" Larson. 22. 9/24/1986 - 7/12/2009

Beatles Tribute Band Is Coming To Anchorage!
BRITBEAT

BritBeat – America’s Premier Tribute to the Beatles is a theatrical recreation concert celebrating the greatest rock and roll group of all time, The Beatles. It is the Beatles. It is their look, their sound, their mannerisms, their accents, their costuming, their instrumentation and their vocal harmonies in the most authentic recreation that you will find. The show is produced to feature a live concert through the ascending Beatles’ eras of music including Ed Sullivan, Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road with retro costume and vintage instrument changes. As well as musical, it is a visual, multimedia and theatrical concert experience that will appeal to audience members of all ages.
Take a trip back to 1964 with BritBeat's tribute to the Beatles. With mop tops, retro costumes, vintage instruments and harmonizing vocals, BritBeat Beatles Tribute Band performs all of the memorable Beatle hits from the sixties. Their British style, charisma and Liverpudlian character creates the ultimate Beatles Tribute concert experience. They display the same youthful excitement and boyish charm as the original 'Fab Four' to recreate the electrifying performances made by the Beatles when they first came onto the American scene and started the 'British Invasion' and 'Beatlemania'.

The Shoot Dangs!

We play what we like to call "BlueCrass!!!!(*!@&!(@!"The Shoot Dangs! are Alaskan-based blueCrass band with a focus to get people movin! We have a banjo, a ukelele, a bass ukelele, and a tap dancer that also plays a banjolele.
We all found each other in Alaska, and decided there was a lack of upbeat music that incorporated acoustic instruments with attitude, and that's our story. Our music is difficult to define, but it is basically fast, upbeat Americana music with strong influences in bluegrass, punk, gypsy, and psychobilly. We play almost all original material with just a few cover songs. Whenever we reach a slower-paced song in our live shows, people are usually relieved to rest their feet for a few minutes.
Our goal is to create a genre of music that forces everyone to completely cut loose, have fun, go crazy, and experience organic, raw, and powerful sound from tiny acoustic instruments .

Whale Fat Follies
The Alaskan Show the Department of Tourism does NOT want you to see!

Just when you thought you were safe, The Whale Fat Follies is back for 2014! The Whale Fat Follies is the most extravagant Alaskan multi-media musical comedy ever staged, and features what Alaskans like best -- Vicious political satire set to a happy, toe-tapping beat.
The Follies proudly presents a live band, stunning singers and dancers, over 800 awe-inspiring images of Alaskan stupidity, and a costume budget of over thirty-five dollars. According to Mr. Whitekeys, "We're not as funny as the Alaska Legislature, but we're proud to be a close second!".
This is the first time The Whale Fat Follies has been presented in two years, and it's back with a satirical vengeance! The Whale Fat Follies originally ran for 21 years at Mr. Whitekeys' Fly By Night Club, and this limited 31-run show is only the third time the show has been staged since the iconic Spenard sleazy bar closed it's doors in 2006.
Joining Mr. Whitekeys on stage is an All Star cast featuring the stunning chanteuse Miss Bridget Sullivan, the totally hilarious Cameron Morrison, Justin "Beaver" Somadoruff on bass, Mudflats Morgan Welch on drums, and the singing multi-media wizard Joey H. D. Murphy.
A tantalizing menu of fresh tasty American comfort cuisine and beverages is available. It's like real dinner theater without any brussels sprouts or beets.

HONKEY TONK REBEL

MARIO CARBONI Joined by Kay Waite
One of Portland, Oregon’s premier duos! Each show is an exciting and energetic honky-tonk experience. Featured in every unforgettable performance are piano, bass, and vocals, including some selections that showcase Mario’s unique ability to play piano and trumpet simultaneously.
Mario Carboni and Kay Waite are a duo from Portland, Oregon, featuring musical styles from rough and ragged Honky-Tonk, to smooth New Orleans Jazz, Smoky blues, heartfelt ballads and bluegrass.
They teamed up in 2011 to form a versatile duo and have since performed hundreds of shows throughout Oregon, Washington, California, Arizona and the back roads of Alaska.
Singer songwriter Mario Carboni aka (The Honky-Tonk Rebel) plays Piano and sings, as well as occasionally augmenting the sound by playing trumpet with the piano. As a professional musician, Mario has performed Portland, Oregon’s largest concert “The Waterfront Blues Festival” as well as touring as far away as Taiwan, and entertaining live audiences of 20,000 and more.
Bassist and singer Kay Waite’s musical interests are rooted in bluegrass, classic country, and western swing. On the bass guitar she provides the backbone, stability, and beat that brings the music to life on the dance floor, while adding a touch of harmony.
7p-9p $5 cover
REBEL BLUES

Blues Band with a Funk Addiction - brining roots, blues and funk into your aural orphus! Born out of a Sunday night blues jam held at a local food and drink establishment, The Rebel Blues Band filled a nook, (and a cranny, well, really, only Jesse fits in the cranny), that was left empty in the current Anchorage music scene at the time. Their goal was simple and straight-forward; to bring blues back to the forefront, and make it accessible to the general public, with an emphasis on the young masses, mainly bombarded with the rap music and the bling and such.

Easton, Stagger, Phillips

In the winter of 2008, Time Easton (Nashville, TN), Leeroy Stagger (Lethbridge, AB), and Evan Phillips (Anchorage, AK) set up a recording studio in an Alaskan cabin. The three contemporary troubadours wanted to capture a sound that contained the smoke of the bonfire and the steady, honest manifesto of the front porch stomp. The result was a full length album, One For The Ditch, and the beginning of a new band, Easton Stagger Phillips.
“… a showcase of talented songwriting, sterling musicianship, and a not-so-subtle reminder that some of America’s best music is still being made on the margins.”- POPMATTERS

WHAT IS A POETRY SLAM

Besides an opportunity to win $50Fiftybucks$50 for refining your thought provoking journal entries, a poetry slam is a competitive event in which poets perform their work and are judged by members of the audience. Everyone who signs up has the opportunity to read in the first round; the lineup for subsequent rounds is determined by the judges' scores. Though rules vary from slam to slam, the basic rules are:

* Each poem must be of the poet's own construction; * Each poet gets three minutes (plus a ten-second grace period) to read one poem. If the poet goes over time, points will be deducted from the total score. * The poet may not use props, costumes or musical instruments; * Of the scores the poet received from the five judges, the high and low scores are dropped and the middle three are added together, giving the poet a total score of 0-30.
Slam is engineered for the audience, whereas a number of open mike readings are engineered as a support network for poets. Slam is designed for the audience to react vocally and openly to all aspects of the show, including the poet's performance, the judges' scores, and the host's banter. Audiences can boo or cheer at the conclusion of a poem, or even during a poem.
The best poetry slams include a wide variety of writing and performance styles. This, of course, depends on who shows up to compete and-- beyond the first round-- what the judges see fit to hear more of. The only requirement for judging is that the audience member not be a family member or intimate friend of any of the competitors.
The best slam poets are those who are skilled at both theatrical performance (stage presence, timing, voice modulation, body language and emoting) and pure poetic writing (metaphor, insight, brevity, sonance, wit).for examples of the many styles and variations of poetry slam performances,
