Anchorage Science Pub- Don't Just Say "Drugs" FEATURING: Tim Hinterberger, UAA neuroscience professor . Starting in the 1970s, when President Nixon declared a 'War on Drugs" and created the Drug Enforcement Agency, we have seen the term "drugs" used more and more generically, with their vast differences in terms of pharmacology and societal impact often being minimized. In recent years, researchers and drug policy experts have begun to push back against this trend and have proposed a truly science-based drugs policy. Dr. Tim Hinterberger, a UAA neuroscience professor and activist for policy reform, will explore the history and significance of the broadened use of the term "drugs." You will learn some of the neuropharmacology that distinguishes various commonly used substances, and you will see why many experts consider our historical policies misguided. From this perspective, Dr. Hinterberger will encourage his listeners to think about where current efforts to end marijuana prohibition may lead. "Just Say No" to "War on Drugs" propaganda and join us! The Anchorage Science Pub offers regular meetings, open to the public, at which presenters give short, informal talks about scientific topics, followed by a question and answer session. Potential presenters are encouraged to contact us here, as are attendees with ideas for interesting topics for future science pub events. FREE 4p-6p
